Joh 6:18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.
Joh 6:20 But he [Jesus] said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid”.
The disciples were in a boat sailing across the sea. It was dark, the sea became rough, and a strong wind was blowing. The disciples were afraid and terrified. But Jesus said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid”. When Jesus said, “It is I”, He was saying “I am in control of this situation”. Jesus is God Incarnate; He is in control of all circumstances. Jesus did not ask them not to be afraid; but He commanded them saying “do not be afraid”.
The reason why the disciples must not be afraid is because Jesus is God Incarnate, Jesus is in control of all circumstances. Jesus says, “do not be afraid! I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades” (Rev. 1:17-18).
Yes, we see darkness in our country. Yes, the sea is becoming rough and a strong wind is blowing. Yes, we have lost our loved ones. Yes, businesses are shutting down, and unemployment is rising. Yes, we are affected and infected by viruses. But child of God, do not be afraid! Jesus is God Incarnate; He is in control of all circumstances.
Thus saith the LORD our God “do not be afraid, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10).
DO NOT BE AFRAID
