JESUS, THE BREAD OF LIFE

Joh 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Joh 6:50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.

In ancient culture, ‘bread’ was not optional but essential. The Bible indicates that ‘bread’ was the basic food for all people. In fact, ‘bread’ is synonymous to ‘food in general’. Yes, the word ‘bread’ is sometimes correctly translated as ‘food’. No one can survive ‘physical life’ without ‘physical food’.

When Jesus spoke about ‘bread’, he was not referring to ‘physical food’. He was referring to Himself as a Person. Jesus is the only permanent satisfaction for the human desire for life. We are not satisfied spiritually unless we know Jesus; we are not spiritually satisfied unless we have Jesus in our lives; and we cannot survive spiritually without Jesus.

To live physically, we need physical bread, but to live spiritually we need Jesus. When we have Jesus, we have life in abundance. When we have Jesus, we have eternal life.

We partake of Jesus when we read and study the Bible. The entire Bible is about Jesus. In the Old Testament, Jesus is coming, but in the New Testament, Jesus has come. In the Old Testament, Jesus is expected, in the Gospels, Jesus is experienced, in Acts, Jesus is preached, in the Epistles, Jesus is explained, in Revelation, Jesus is reigning. The entire Bible bear witness about Jesus (Joh. 5:39).

Let us focus on Jesus. Let us eat Jesus everyday – He is the bread of life.
