When I was still a non-believer, I came across the verse in the bible that says “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Mat. 5:3) I was very happy with this verse since I interpreted it as if God favors those people who lack money, resources, and food that they need on daily basis. At the time my family and I were living in poverty.
It was only a few years later that I realize that the verse does not talk about poverty in general, but it’s referring to the poor in spirit. People who are poor in spirit are those who realize their need for the spirit of God in everything they do.
The first and the greatest need a person has is the spirit of God. Those who acknowledge that they need the spirit of God in everything they do, have a dependency on Him. People who depend on God and seek God’s guidance in everything thing they do will be blessed by God. This is because they acknowledge that they are spiritually helpless. The kingdom of heaven belongs to such people.
We should not call God when we have finalized our decisions in order for God to rubber-stamp them, instead God should be involved from the beginning. Our prayer should be to be filled with the spirit of God every day. Let us desperately seek the spirit of God to fill us every day. You need the spirit of God to guide you when dealing with your family, marriage, future, career, money, and everything.
Then the Kingdom of heaven belongs to you.
Mat 5:3 ESV Says “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Blessed are those who mourn.
