The major function of salt is to add flavor to the food and to preserve some products from getting rotten. The salt itself cannot be flavored and no preservatives can be added to it. The salt is good as long as it keeps its identity and its characteristics. There is no way of restoring salt that has lost its identity and characteristics. Such salt would be useless and need to be thrown away.
Jesus spoke to his disciples about their identity. He told them that they are the salt of the world. Their value would be experienced by the world as long as they keep their identity and characteristics. What would make them useless would be when they fail to be who they were. I that case they would be useless and good for nothing. You need to know your identity and keep it. People around you need to experience your value just because of who you are. Without performing or doing anything special, you can make a difference by just keeping your identity. Your identity and characteristics are enough to change the world. Let people experience the love and grace of God through you.
Mat 5:13 CEV You are like salt for everyone on earth. But if salt no longer tastes like salt, how can it make food salty? All it is good for is to be thrown out and walked on.
Be salty and make a difference.
